Thank you for the Christmas greetings from many of you.  May I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2012.

Hong Kong is a busy city of the east meeting the west.  Christmas is more of a commercial festivity yet give time for family and friends to get together.
My Christmas is centered around the midnight mass and because of the volume of church goers for this special gathering, I normally have to wrap myself up warmly and attend the mass outdoors, watching a large screen. 

It is fun to walk around the nicely decorated office buildings and shopping malls during this holiday season, to feel the happy spirit and make good use of the holiday to have some quality time with the family.

In Ireland, late fall is the time of the year to make the house ready for the upcoming holiday celebrations. An Irish home is cleaned top to bottom, and special holiday linens would be brought out of storage. Olden days in Ireland would see the home being white washed and general repairs to the home. Once all is clean it is ready for festive Christmas decorating!

Irish Celtic Traditions

No Irish home would be complete without the holly. Holly with its glossy green leaves and festive red berries are perfect for holiday decorating. At Christmas in Ireland, holly was used to decorate the entire house. A spray was placed over the door as well as on the mantle, around picture frames, among the plates on the cupboard, as candle rings and in other areas of the home. Gifts of holly boughs were also given to neighbors. One charming folklore superstition was that the fairy folk would come in out of the cold to find shelter in the holly branches.

To the Celtics holly represented both life and rebirth, the evergreen leaves symbolized life during a time when all else was bare and the red berries represented the coming of Spring. With the coming of Christianity to Ireland the berries took on a new meaning, new life in Christ.

Irish Food

The Christmas cooking would start early with the making of the plum pudding, breads and spiced beef. A traditional Irish Christmas meal might consist of roasted goose or roasted Turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables, sausages, and puddings. Spiced beef is often eaten sliced cold with fresh bread in the days after the main feast.

Irish Hospitality
Hospitality is abundant in Ireland and it is reflected in many holiday customs. A lighted candle would be placed in the window as a welcome beacon for both traveler and wandering priest. The candle is placed in the window on Christmas eve to signify the welcome the Holy family looking for shelter. Another aspect of Irish hospitality is seen after the Christmas meal. The doors are left unlocked and the table is set with bread and milk for travelers who might come in the night after seeing the welcome of the lighted candle in the window.

The 12 Days of Christmas

The twelve days of Christmas are celebrated between the birth of Christ, December 26 and the Epiphany,(coming of the Magi) January 6. A small gift would be given on each day during this time. The 12 days of Christmas included many festivities including parties and the visiting of friends, family and neighbours. Twelfth night would be the end of the celebrations and the day that holiday decorations were taken down.

Christmas from the World: Posadas in Mexico

In México we celebrate "La Navidad" (Christmas) with many parties called "posadas" where you do some

Christian prayings, but also games and food for the kids, We have the traditional "piñatas" which we hang from a tree and we filled them with candies, fruit and toys, so the kids will have to break it to could get the presents.

In México we say: ¡Feliz Navidad y un Feliz Año Nuevo! (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!)

Celebración 100 años IBM - 15 Junio

Esta semana celebramos los 100 años de IBM. Qué mejor manera que celebrar con servicio, empleados de todo el mundo (170 paises) estaremos trabajando un día completo en servicio a la comunidad.
¡Apúntense, vale la pena!

Queridos IBMistas,  

Hoy  empieza una semana histórica para nuestra compañía. En los próximos 7 días, a lo largo de más de 170 países en todo el mundo. Estaremos celebrando el centenario de IBM como empresa.

Quiero agradecer a cada uno de ustedes, por todo lo que han hecho para lograr que lleguemos hasta aquí, y por todo lo que hacen cada día para hacer de IBM la gran compañía por  lo cual se distingue.

Durante la próxima semana  reflejaremos varias de la dimensiones de la estatura, logros  y carácter de IBM.
El miércoles 15 de Junio es el último día de nuestros primeros 100 años y será un punto muy importante de nuestra celebración centenaria de servicio. Después el 16 de Junio, el primer día de nuestro segundo centenario, remarcaremos la ocasión observando el legado e IBM en innovación, impacto global y liderazgo de negocios, y mas importante  revisando hacia futuro las diversas formas en que estamos trabajando para construir un planeta inteligente. Estos son los temas que se han incluido en el libro Making the World Work Better: The Ideas that Shaped a Century and a Company, que sera distribuido a  los IBMistas respectivamente.
Toda la semana del centenario será capturada en el sitio de IBM interno (W3). Los invito a detenerse en el sitio para ver los que sus colegas están haciendo, y también para compartir sus propias experiencias con cada uno, sus clientes, familia y amigos.

En medio de las felicitaciones y el orgullo que sentimos como empresa, Deseo que cada uno pueda llevarse algo mas personal de esta semana. Deseo que cada IBMista tenga la oportunidad de reflexionar lo que significa como profesionista y como ciudadano global el pertenecer a esta institución, en este momento, no solo desde el trabajo que realizas hoy, sino el trabajo de toda una vida.
El mundo nos ve hoy en día con ojos frescos- Gracias  mayormente a la importancia y el desempeño de nuestro negocio y las transformaciones que ha hecho en la década pasada, amplificado por nuestro Centenario, el logro de nuestro Jeopardy!- computadora ganadora  Watson, y nuestra agenda en progreso para un Planeta más inteligente.
Me siento increíblemente afortunado de las oportunidades que nuestro aniversario nos proporciona para incrementar el éxito de IBM hacia delante, y para expandir el impacto que los IBMistas hacen en todo el mundo, hoy y para las futuras generaciones.
Tenemos un segundo centenario hacia adelante, que comienza esta semana. Confío que logremos lo máximo de este aniversario con su participación, compañeros IBMistas.

My Fellow IBMers,

Today begins a historic week for our company. Over the next several days, across more than 170 countries around the world, we will be marking IBM's centennial as an enterprise.
I want to thank every one of you for all you have done to get us here, and for all you do every day to make IBM the great and distinctive company it is.
In the week ahead we will reflect upon the many dimensions of IBM's unique stature, accomplishments and character. Wednesday, June 15 – the last day of our first 100 years – will be a high point of our centennial Celebration of Service. Then on June 16, the first day of our second century, we will mark the occasion by looking at IBM's legacy of innovation, global impact and business leadership, and most importantly, by looking ahead at the many ways we are working to build a smarter planet. These themes are also captured in the book Making the World Work Better: The Ideas that Shaped a Century and a Company, which will be distributed to all eligible IBMers.
All of our Centennial Week will be captured here on w3. I urge you to stop by whenever you can to see what your colleagues are doing – and also to share your own experiences and perceptions with each other, your clients, family and friends.
Amid all the congratulations and the pride we justly feel as an enterprise, I hope each of us can also take away something more personal from this week. I hope every IBMer has a chance to reflect on what it means as a professional and as a global citizen to be at this institution, at this moment – not just for the work you do today, but for your life's work.
The world is seeing us today with fresh eyes – thanks most importantly to the performance of our business and the transformation of our company over the past decade, amplified by our Centennial, the achievement of our Jeopardy!-winning computer Watson, and our ongoing Smarter Planet agenda.
I myself feel incredibly fortunate for the chance our anniversary affords to increase IBM's success going forward, and to expand the impact we make as IBMers on the world, now and for future generations.
We've got an exciting second century ahead of us, and it begins this week. I look forward to making the most of it with you, my fellow IBMers.
