 La Universidad de Guadalajara ratificó su colaboración con IBM  tras la firma del convenio de Iniciativa Académica, que en esta edición abarcará la posibilidad de que estudiantes de posgrado hasta nivel doctorado hagan sus prácticas profesionales en IBM e impulsar investigaciones en tecnologías móviles, de Big Data, Nube y ciudades inteligentes.

El Rector General, Mtro. Itzcóatl Tonatiuh Bravo Padilla, informó que en breve la institución, con equipo tecnológico de IBM, iniciará el desarrollo de tres productos académicos acordes con los trabajos que realiza el Centro de Innovación de Ciudades Inteligentes, del Centro Universitario de Ciencias Económico-Administrativas (CUCEA).

Durante la firma, este martes en las instalaciones de la Vicerrectoría Ejecutiva de la UdeG, Bravo Padilla expuso la propuesta de habilitar el primer programa de maestría en ciudades inteligentes, liderado por CUCEA, con miras a formar una generación sobre este tema en América Latina o todo el continente, con el apoyo de profesores internacionales y por supuesto contando con la experiencia de IBM.

“Formar una generación en el tema implica dotar a las grandes zonas metropolitanas del recurso de alto nivel que están requiriendo para el manejo de sus principales programas: desechos sólidos, alumbrado inteligente efectivo, gestión de permisos de construcción, movilidad, agua, entre otros".

El director del Campus Tecnológico IBM Guadalajara, Ing. Eugenio Godard, dijo que analizarán y trabajarán en su estructuración. Respecto al convenio, señaló que la UdeG e IBM han sido fundamentales en el clúster de alta tecnología, en la formación de científicos mexicanos en aspectos como analítica o cloud (computación en la nube).

“Lo que sabemos de data (almacén de información) es obsoleto, todo está por venir (…) la nueva ciencia de los datos, falta entender su biología, impacto social, lo que va a cambiar de todas las disciplinas. Contamos con buen capital humano, lo que abre la posibilidad de tener tres o cuatro practicantes en los laboratorio de diseño, donde esto está ocurriendo”.

Durante el evento, el rector agradeció a los embajadores de IBM que han gestionado y hecho realidad estos proyectos de colaboración: Barbara Judith Baena y Manuel Avalos.

An appreciation - John F. Akers - IBM

 

An appreciation John F. Akers was the iconic IBMer of his era. With a strong jaw and athletic bearing, the Boston native came to epitomize the upright corporate citizen in the conservative blue suit. He joined IBM in 1960 after serving in the Navy as a jet pilot, and quickly took to the company’s distinct culture. “We were very square,” he recounted in a 2010 interview. “We wore the blue suits, white shirts with button-down collars, striped ties, fedoras and wingtip shoes.” That image came to stand for something: “The customers felt they could count on us.” 

IBM’s 6th chief executive, he died August 22, 2014 in Boston at age 79. 

 Samuel J. Palmisano, who had earlier in his career served as Akers’ executive assistant and who later became IBM's 8th CEO, describes Akers as the ultimate company man -- loyal to the company he loved. “People liked John Akers, because they knew he cared about them -- as employees, as people, and as IBMers," Palmisano said. “John was so committed to the institution and its culture."

 Akers was one of the builders of the modern IBM. After getting a business degree from Yale University and serving as a carrier pilot in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960, he began his IBM career as a sales trainee. For his first three years as a salesman, his territory was Vermont—where his first major sale was to a dairy association. A major break came a few years later, in 1971, when he was assigned to corporate headquarters to be the executive assistant to Frank Cary, who was then a senior vice president and who ultimately became the company’s CEO. Akers recalled later that working for Cary was the equivalent of getting an MBA, and he said he learned so much that was useful to him for the rest of his career. 

 This was the era when IBM was emerging as the most successful company in the nascent computer industry. The System/360 computer family, which was released in 1964, revolutionized the industry by offering clients a series of computers suited for different size businesses that ran the same software. As a sales person and later as an executive, Akers helped make System/360 and its successor, System/370, huge successes. 

A top performer, he received 16 promotions in a span of 23 years. He was named president of the Data Processing Division, then IBM's largest domestic marketing unit, in 1974 at age 39. He became president of the entire company in 1982 and chief executive in 1985. After an eight-year tenure as CEO, he retired from IBM in 1993. 

People who worked for Akers call him a thoughtful leader who made sure people knew what was expected of them and helped them meet the goals he set. Retired IBM executive Nicholas M. Donofrio recalls the time in 1988 when Akers sent him to Austin, Texas, to complete the development of long-overdue Unix workstations and servers, which were based on a new microprocessor architecture. Three months later, Donofrio reported back to Akers that it would take another nine months to deliver the products. “He had every reason to fire me,” recounts Donofrio. “Instead, he asked what additional resources I needed and agreed to meet with me monthly to insure we made the new schedule. He did, I did, and we did.” Ultimately the new product line, called the RS6000, became an important part of IBM’s product portfolio. 

As IBM’s centennial approached in 2011, Akers expressed satisfaction in what the company—and he—had accomplished. “Many things have changed over the years but the values of IBM then and the values of IBM today are what we have built on successfully all of these years,” he said. “It continues to result in the best value and solution for the customer.”

Lorenzo H. Zambrano , presidente y director general de CEMEX , SAB de CV, una compañía global de materiales para la construcción , falleció el 12 de mayo a la edad de 70 años.
Zambrano ha sido miembro del Consejo de Administración de IBM desde 2003 y desde 2011 fue presidente de los Directores y Comité de Gobierno Corporativo y miembro del Comité Ejecutivo de IBM.
" Lorenzo era un líder extraordinario y un hombre extraordinario ", dijo la presidenta de IBM , Presidente y CEO , Ginni Rometty . "Transformó Cemex en un gigante global, y sirvió como un valioso miembro de la Junta de IBM durante la última década . Profundamente Echaremos de menos su experiencia en los negocios , su sabiduría y su pasión por hacer un impacto positivo en el mundo . "
Zambrano se integró a CEMEX en 1968. Fue nombrado director general en 1985, y también se ha desempeñado como presidente de la junta desde 1995. Él llevó a la compañía a crecer a partir de una pequeña empresa regional de cemento en una tapa compañía de soluciones de construcción global.
Además, durante los últimos cinco años , se desempeñó como director de Fomento Económico Mexicano , SAB de CV y Grupo Televisa , así como presidente de la junta directiva del Tecnológico de Monterrey.
"México ha perdido un extraordinario hombre de negocios y un gran mexicano", el ministro de Hacienda de México, Luis Videgaray comentó a través de Twitter esta semana. El presidente de México , Enrique Peña Nieto lo llamó "un pionero de la industria."

Lorenzo H. Zambrano, chairman and chief executive officer of CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V., a global building materials company, passed away on May 12 at the age of 70. 

Zambrano served as a member of IBM's Board since 2003 and since 2011 he was chair of the Directors and Corporate Governance Committee and member of IBM's Executive Committee. 


"Lorenzo was a remarkable leader and a remarkable man," said IBM Chairman, President and CEO, Ginni Rometty. "He transformed Cemex into a global giant, and served as an invaluable member of the IBM Board over the past decade. We will deeply miss his business expertise, his wisdom and his passion for making a positive impact on the world." 


Zambrano joined CEMEX in 1968. He was named chief executive officer in 1985 and has also served as chairman of the board since 1995. He led the company to grow from a small regional cement firm into a top global building solution company. 


Additionally, during the past five years, he served as a director of Fomento Economico Mexicano, S.A.B de C.V. and Grupo Televisa, as well as chairman of the board of the Tecnologico de Monterrey.

"Mexico has lost an extraordinary businessman and a great Mexican," Mexican Finance Minister Luis Videgaray commented via Twitter this week. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto called him "an industrial pioneer."  


The Wall Street Journal called Zambrano “corporate Mexico's informal ambassador to the world” and “the face of Mexico's northern business capital of Monterrey.”

La destreza y acierto en el arte fotográfico de Luis Cecilio Toussaint, nos brinda un mágico testimonio en esta exposición “Diálogos desde la Oscuridad”.

 

Para  lograr ese instante preciso y memorable que sólo saben captar aquellos a quienes la vida los doto con la virtud del buen fotógrafo. Luis ha practicado durante muchos años la fotografía de manera profesional, ncluso ha impartido diplomados en el ITESO hasta que hace veinte años, en el camino la vista desapareció

“¿Cuántos ciegos se necesitan para tomar una fotografía?” –pregunta Luis, el mismo responde: “UNO” –“pero ¿saben cómo he podido continuar tomando fotografías, prácticamente sin “ver” lo que tomo?... gracias a que cuento con el mejor equipo de trabajo”.

Equipo de trabajo que lo constituyen sus hijos, su esposa y algunos pacientes amigos que le narran y guían a través de lo que hay precisamente detrás de “esa película negra”, que ahora le separa de lo que antes podía apreciar con sus ojos, para capturar ese cuadro en el paisaje que él imagina con lo que las personas le describen y desea plasmar.

Luis Toussaint, trabajo por más de tres décadas IBM en diferentes áreas, ahora jubilado con 63 años de vida, es un voluntario activo en diferentes Instituciones. Sus fotografías han sido presentado en varios foros como: Trompo Mágico, Hospital Civil, Javil, etc

Fallece uno de los Arquitectos más importantes de México: Ricardo Legorreta

Ricardo Legorreta Vilchis, fue el arquitecto que dió vida a lo que hoy conocemos como el Campus Tecnológico de IBM Guadalajara

El pasado 30 de Diciembre, México despidió a los 80 años de edad al aclamado arquitecto mexicano, Ricardo Legorreta Vilchis, uno de lo arquitectos más reconocidos internacionalmente, gracias a su trayectoria arquitectónica a nivel mundial.

Legorreta nació el 07 de mayo de 1931 en la ciudad de México , en donde estudió arquitectura en la UNAM, que le dió los conocimientos necesarios para poder ejercer su profesión por más de 50 años. El estilo de Legorreta es caracterizado por integrar al color como una parte esencial en sus obras, así como también por la habilidad de recuperar edificios históricos en espacios públicos.

En 1975 el Arquitecto Legorreta estuvo a cargo de la construcción de la que en ese entonces sería la planta de manufactura de IBM Guadalajara, hoy Campus Tecnológico, donde siempre estuvo interesado en lograr plasmar el carácter mexicano y transmitir una atmósfera placentera para los empleados en cada parte de la planta. La tarjeta perforada fabricada unos años atrás por IBM, sirvió de inspiración para que Legorreta definiera la fachada del Campus.

Entre las obras más representativas de Legorreta están las siguientes: el Papalote Museo del Niño, el museo de arte contemporaneo de Monterrey, el Tecnológico de Monterrey campus Santa fé, la remodelación del zoológico de Chapultepec, la biblioteca municipal en San Antonio, Texas; la restauración de plaza Pershing Square en Los Ángeles, California, entre otras.

Ricardo Legorreta fue reconocido en numerosas ocasiones con distintos galardones entre los que podemos destacar el Premio Nacional de las Artes 1991, la medalla de Oro por la Unión Internacional de Arquitectos, el premio Imperial 2011 que otorga la Asociación de Arte de Japón y en septiembre del año pasado recibió por parte de la Universidad Autónoma de México el doctorado honoris causa.

El despacho de arquitectos Legorreta + Legorreta fundado por Ricardo Legorreta ahora estará a cargo de su hijo menor Victor Legorreta.

Thank you for the Christmas greetings from many of you.  May I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2012.

Hong Kong is a busy city of the east meeting the west.  Christmas is more of a commercial festivity yet give time for family and friends to get together.
My Christmas is centered around the midnight mass and because of the volume of church goers for this special gathering, I normally have to wrap myself up warmly and attend the mass outdoors, watching a large screen. 

It is fun to walk around the nicely decorated office buildings and shopping malls during this holiday season, to feel the happy spirit and make good use of the holiday to have some quality time with the family.

Nollaig Shona - "Christmas Greetings!" from Ireland

In Ireland, late fall is the time of the year to make the house ready for the upcoming holiday celebrations. An Irish home is cleaned top to bottom, and special holiday linens would be brought out of storage. Olden days in Ireland would see the home being white washed and general repairs to the home. Once all is clean it is ready for festive Christmas decorating!

Irish Celtic Traditions

No Irish home would be complete without the holly. Holly with its glossy green leaves and festive red berries are perfect for holiday decorating. At Christmas in Ireland, holly was used to decorate the entire house. A spray was placed over the door as well as on the mantle, around picture frames, among the plates on the cupboard, as candle rings and in other areas of the home. Gifts of holly boughs were also given to neighbors. One charming folklore superstition was that the fairy folk would come in out of the cold to find shelter in the holly branches.

To the Celtics holly represented both life and rebirth, the evergreen leaves symbolized life during a time when all else was bare and the red berries represented the coming of Spring. With the coming of Christianity to Ireland the berries took on a new meaning, new life in Christ.

Irish Food

The Christmas cooking would start early with the making of the plum pudding, breads and spiced beef. A traditional Irish Christmas meal might consist of roasted goose or roasted Turkey, potatoes, cranberry sauce, vegetables, sausages, and puddings. Spiced beef is often eaten sliced cold with fresh bread in the days after the main feast.

Irish Hospitality
Hospitality is abundant in Ireland and it is reflected in many holiday customs. A lighted candle would be placed in the window as a welcome beacon for both traveler and wandering priest. The candle is placed in the window on Christmas eve to signify the welcome the Holy family looking for shelter. Another aspect of Irish hospitality is seen after the Christmas meal. The doors are left unlocked and the table is set with bread and milk for travelers who might come in the night after seeing the welcome of the lighted candle in the window.

The 12 Days of Christmas

The twelve days of Christmas are celebrated between the birth of Christ, December 26 and the Epiphany,(coming of the Magi) January 6. A small gift would be given on each day during this time. The 12 days of Christmas included many festivities including parties and the visiting of friends, family and neighbours. Twelfth night would be the end of the celebrations and the day that holiday decorations were taken down.

In México we celebrate "La Navidad" (Christmas) with many parties called "posadas" where you do some

Christian prayings, but also games and food for the kids, We have the traditional "piñatas" which we hang from a tree and we filled them with candies, fruit and toys, so the kids will have to break it to could get the presents.

In México we say: ¡Feliz Navidad y un Feliz Año Nuevo! (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!)

Samuel J. Palmisano continues as chairman

 

Armonk, NY, October 25, 2011 - The IBM board of directors has elected Virginia M. Rometty president and chief executive officer of the company, effective January 1, 2012. She was also elected a member of the board of directors, effective at that time. Ms. Rometty is currently IBM senior vice president and group executive for sales, marketing and strategy. She succeeds Samuel J. Palmisano, who currently is IBM chairman, president and chief executive officer. Mr. Palmisano will remain chairman of the board.
"Ginni Rometty has successfully led several of IBM's most important businesses over the past decade—from the formation of IBM Global Business Services to the build-out of our Growth Markets Unit," Mr. Palmisano said. "But she is more than a superb operational executive. With every leadership role, she has strengthened our ability to integrate IBM's capabilities for our clients. She has spurred us to keep pace with the needs and aspirations of our clients by deepening our expertise and industry knowledge. Ginni's long-term strategic thinking and client focus are seen in our growth initiatives, from cloud computing and analytics to the commercialization of Watson. She brings to the role of CEO a unique combination of vision, client focus, unrelenting drive, and passion for IBMers and the company's future. I know the board agrees with me that Ginni is the ideal CEO to lead IBM into its second century."
Ms. Rometty said: "There is no greater privilege in business than to be asked to lead IBM, especially at this moment. Sam had the courage to transform the company based on his belief that computing technology, our industry, even world economies would shift in historic ways. All of that has come to pass. Today, IBM's strategies and business model are correct. Our ability to execute and deliver consistent results for clients and shareholders is strong. This is due to Sam's leadership, his discipline, and his unshakable belief in the ability of IBM and IBMers to lead into the future. Sam taught us, above all, that we must never stop reinventing IBM."
Mr. Palmisano, 60, became IBM chief executive officer in 2002 and chairman of the board in 2003. During his tenure, IBM exited commoditizing businesses, including PCs, printers and hard disk drives, and greatly increased investments in high-value businesses and technologies. He has overseen the significant expansion of IBM in the emerging markets of China, India, Brazil, Russia and dozens of other developing countries, transforming IBM from a multinational into a globally integrated enterprise. In 2008, he launched IBM's Smarter Planet strategy, which describes the company's view of the next era of information technology and its impact on business and society.
Since Mr. Palmisano became CEO, IBM has set records in pre-tax earnings, earnings per share, and free cash flow. During Mr. Palmisano's tenure, IBM increased EPS by almost five times, generated over $100 billion in free cash flow, and invested more than $50 billion in research and development—creating over $100 billion of shareholder value since 2002 through an increase in market capitalization and dividends paid.

As global sales leader for IBM, Ms. Rometty, 54, is accountable for revenue, profit, and client satisfaction in the 170 global markets in which IBM does business. She is responsible for IBM's worldwide results, which exceeded $99 billion in 2010. She also is responsible for leading IBM's global strategy, marketing and communications functions. Previously, Ms. Rometty was senior vice president of IBM Global Business Services. In that role, she led the successful integration of PricewaterhouseCoopers Consulting—the largest acquisition in professional services history, building a global team of more than 100,000 business consultants and services experts. She has also served as general manager of IBM Global Services, Americas, and of IBM's Global Insurance and Financial Services Sector.
Ms. Rometty joined IBM in 1981 as a systems engineer. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree with high honors in computer science and electrical engineering from Northwestern University.
